Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome to TNT Forge. Every piece we make is produced with an emphasis on craftsmanship, durability, and traditional workmanship. Because our products are handmade, no two pieces are ever exactly alike—and that is part of what makes them special.
About TNT Forge
Where are TNT Forge products made?
Our products are handmade in Virginia, using traditional craftsmanship and modern tools where appropriate. TNT Forge is built around the idea of making useful, durable goods that are meant to be used rather than simply displayed.
Are your products actually handmade?
Yes. Our products are individually made in our shop rather than mass-produced. Depending on the item, that may include forging, shaping, grinding, welding, woodworking, finishing, and hand-fitting.
Because of this process, small variations in size, shape, color, grain, and finish are normal and should be expected.
What makes TNT Forge different from mass-produced products?
We believe useful objects should be built to last.
Rather than designing products around the fastest or cheapest manufacturing process, we focus on solid materials, traditional methods, thoughtful design, and workmanship. Many of our pieces are inspired by the tools and household goods that were built by hand and expected to serve a family for generations.
Materials & Construction
What materials do you use?
Our products may be made from materials including steel, copper, brass, hardwoods, and other carefully selected materials depending on the item.
Material specifications are listed on individual product pages whenever applicable.
Will my item look exactly like the pictures?
Not necessarily—and that’s intentional.
Handmade products naturally have variations in grain, color, texture, hammer marks, dimensions, and finish. Your piece will be made to the same design and standards shown in the listing, but it will have its own individual character.
Are your wooden products made from solid wood?
Where a product is described as solid wood, it is made from solid wood rather than a veneer or composite material. Natural variations in grain, knots, color, and texture are part of the character of the wood.
Are your metal products food safe?
Products intended for food preparation or serving are made and finished with their intended use in mind. Please refer to the individual product description for specific material and finish information.
If you have a question about a particular item, contact us before purchasing and we’ll be happy to clarify.
Care & Maintenance
How do I care for my wooden TNT Forge product?
Wood is a natural material and benefits from occasional maintenance.
Wash wooden utensils and kitchenware by hand with mild soap and water. Do not place them in the dishwasher or allow them to soak for extended periods.
Allow them to dry thoroughly and periodically apply an appropriate food-safe wood conditioner or oil when the wood begins to look dry.
Can I put wooden products in the dishwasher?
No. Dishwashers expose wood to prolonged heat and water that can cause cracking, warping, splitting, or premature deterioration.
Hand washing is recommended.
How do I care for forged or steel products?
Care depends on the particular finish and intended use. In general, keep carbon steel dry and avoid leaving it submerged in water.
A light coating of appropriate food-safe oil may be recommended for products made from unfinished or carbon steel.
Refer to the product listing for specific care instructions.
Will steel rust?
Some steels naturally develop surface oxidation when exposed to moisture. This is especially true of traditional carbon steels.
Proper drying and occasional oiling will help prevent unwanted rust and maintain the finish.
Orders & Custom Work
Can I request a custom item?
We may be able to make certain items to custom dimensions, materials, or specifications depending on the project.
If you have something specific in mind, contact us before ordering so we can discuss what is possible.
Can you make a matching set?
In many cases, yes. Matching utensils, kitchen tools, serving pieces, or other products can often be produced as a set.
Contact us with what you are looking for and we’ll let you know what we can make.
Can I request a particular type of wood?
For some wooden products, specific wood species may be available. Availability depends on current stock and the requirements of the item.
If you have a preferred wood, ask before ordering and we’ll see what we can accommodate.
Can I order something as a gift?
Absolutely. Handmade goods make excellent gifts for cooks, craftsmen, homesteaders, collectors, and anyone who appreciates traditional workmanship.
If the item is being purchased as a gift, please make sure the shipping address and order information are correct when placing the order.
Shipping
How long does it take to receive my order?
Because our products are handmade, processing times can vary depending on the item and current workload.
The estimated processing time will be provided on the individual product listing whenever applicable.
Do you ship outside the United States?
International shipping availability may vary by product and destination. If international shipping is not offered for a particular item, contact us and we can determine whether an alternative arrangement is possible.
What happens if my package is damaged during shipping?
Please contact us as soon as possible if your order arrives damaged.
Take photographs of the packaging and the damaged item and contact us with your order information so we can help determine the appropriate next step.
Returns & Exchanges
Do you accept returns?
Our return policy is provided on each applicable product listing and at checkout.
Because many of our products are individually made, customized, or made specifically to order, certain items may not be eligible for return.
Please review the applicable listing before purchasing.
What if I receive the wrong item?
If you receive an item different from what you ordered, contact us and we’ll work with you to correct the issue.
What if my handmade item has a defect?
We stand behind our workmanship. If you believe your item has a manufacturing or workmanship defect, contact us with photographs and your order information so we can evaluate the issue.
Handmade Products
Why are there small differences between pieces?
Every piece is individually made.
Small differences in dimensions, texture, color, wood grain, hammer marks, or finish are natural characteristics of handmade work. They are not necessarily defects.
In fact, these variations are one of the things that distinguish a handmade piece from a factory-produced product.
Will my item have hammer marks or other signs of the making process?
Some products are intentionally left with visible evidence of the forging or fabrication process.
These marks are part of the character of the piece and reflect how it was made.
Are your products intended to be heirlooms?
That’s the goal.
TNT Forge was created around the idea that useful things should be made well enough to be used for years, repaired when possible, and eventually passed down.
We aren’t interested in making disposable goods.
Our Heritage
Why is TNT Forge connected to the family land?
TNT Forge is part of a larger family tradition of making, building, farming, and working with our hands.
Our family has remained connected to the same Virginia land for generations, with the property tracing back to the original 1770 land grant.
That history influences the way we approach our work today: make something useful, make it well, and make it to last.
Is every TNT Forge product made on the family property?
Our goal is to keep as much of the work as possible connected to our own shop and operation. Specific production details can vary by product, so individual listings will provide the most accurate information.
